When Foods of Italy exhibits at Formland, it is not only presenting beautiful bowls, platters and vases. It is sharing the story of one of Southern Italy’s oldest ceramic traditions – a craft that has been passed down through generations for more than 400 years.
In the town of Grottaglie in Puglia, internationally renowned for its rich ceramic heritage, you will find Nicola Fasano Ceramiche. Here, the Fasano family has worked with clay since the 17th century, and today the craft continues through its 18th generation.
The company was established in its current form in 1968, combining traditional production methods with a more contemporary design expression. The result is a collection that beautifully balances Italian heritage with modern aesthetics.
One of the brand’s most distinctive features is its iconic Macchiettato decoration, also known as Schizzato. This traditional technique is still carried out entirely by hand, with artisans skillfully splattering pigment onto white clay surfaces. Each piece develops its own unique pattern, ensuring that no two items are ever exactly alike. The vibrant finish has become an international symbol of rustic Italian elegance and authentic craftsmanship.
Over the years, the studio’s distinctive ceramics have attracted attention far beyond Italy’s borders. The collection was championed by British design icon Terence Conran, who introduced the brand to an international audience through his renowned retail stores. Bespoke hand-painted pieces have also found their way into some of Italy’s most exclusive hotels and resorts, including Francis Ford Coppola’s Palazzo Margherita in Puglia.
Today, Nicola Fasano remains committed to traditional craftsmanship. Every piece is shaped, glazed and hand-painted at the workshop in Grottaglie by skilled artisans who continue generations of expertise and passion for their craft.
At Formland, Foods of Italy presents a carefully curated selection of Nicola Fasano ceramics – from the classic Macchiettato collections to colourful bowls, serving platters and decorative vases. What unites them all is an authentic Italian craftsmanship and the unique character that only handmade ceramics can bring to a home.
